Spot 01

The best picnic infrastructure in McKinney. The park has multiple covered pavilion areas, maintained tables with genuine shade, open meadow space, and the creek corridor that gives the park its character. The pavilion areas near the creek are the most pleasant in the fall and spring. On a Saturday morning before noon the park is busy but not crowded and the combination of the picnic, the creek sound, and the green space produces one of the better low-cost shared outdoor experiences in the city.

The open meadow areas at Erwin Park in the northwest are less visited than the trail sections and provide genuine outdoor space away from the surrounding development. A blanket on the meadow in fall or spring with a view of the treeline has the specific quality of an unhurried outdoor afternoon that is rare in the DFW suburbs. No pavilion required. Arrive in the morning and stay through lunch. The drive out on the rural roads approaching the park is part of the experience.

The lakeside areas at Bonnie Wenk have benches and maintained green space with the lake as an anchor. A picnic along the water here has a specific quality of urban park that rewards the morning arrival — the light on the lake, the relative quiet before the weekend crowds arrive, and the combination of food and water produces one of the more pleasant accessible outdoor experiences in McKinney proper. Best from September through May.

Russell Creek Park has open grass areas adjacent to the creek corridor that work well for an informal picnic that combines food with access to the trail. The combination of a blanket lunch and a creek walk afterward makes a complete low-logistics afternoon. The park is centrally located in McKinney and the most accessible of the picnic options for residents who don't want to drive to the northwest or east.

The grounds of the historic square and the adjacent Fain Park area are an underused outdoor option in the heart of McKinney. An informal picnic from one of the downtown restaurants and delis on the square, eaten on the grass in Fain Park or the square's surrounding green space, produces a specifically McKinney version of a downtown outdoor afternoon. Low logistics, interesting surroundings, and a short walk to coffee or dessert afterward.

"The picnic that produces the best conversation is usually the one that had no particular plan attached to it. Gabe Nesbitt in October. Erwin meadow in April. The square on a quiet Tuesday."

For Couples

Protected outdoor time together does something the inside of a house doesn't.

In my work with McKinney couples, the outdoor shared time that matters most is usually the simplest kind. A picnic creates an environment where neither person has a task to perform and both people are facing the same direction. That combination is more connecting than most couples realize before they try it. If you want to work on what comes after the picnic, that's what couples therapy addresses.
