Book a Free 15-Min ConsultI'm Amiti Grozdon, a licensed therapist (M.Ed., LPC) practicing virtually across Texas. I specialize in couples therapy, ADHD, anxiety, and neurodiverse relationships. If you and your partner are doing okay on paper but something still feels off — disconnected, stuck in the same loops, or like you're roommates more than partners — that's exactly what I work on. Sessions are 50 minutes, fully virtual, private pay.
West Texas is stunning in its own way — the wide sky, the flat horizon, the particular quality of light at dusk. But the distances here are real. If you and your partner are looking for a proper getaway, you're usually looking at a few hours' drive. These are the destinations worth making that drive for, and what to do when you get there.
"A trip doesn't fix what's between you. But it can lower the temperature enough that you remember who you are when you're not managing the week."
About 3 hours southwest of Midland, Marfa is unlike anywhere else in Texas — a small high-desert town that became an international art destination in the 1970s when minimalist artist Donald Judd moved there and installed permanent large-scale works in the landscape. The result is genuinely strange and beautiful. The Chinati Foundation, the Prada Marfa installation, the wide open sky, the adobe architecture — it's the kind of place that slows people down in a way they don't expect.
Stay at El Cosmico for the full experience — a bohemian campground with renovated trailers, yurts, and teepees. Have dinner at Stellina or drinks at the Marfa Ballroom. Stay for at least one night to catch the famous Marfa lights.
Walk the Chinati Foundation together without phones. The scale of Judd's work demands a kind of presence that's hard to manufacture. Let it do its job.
Big Bend is one of the least-visited national parks in the US, which makes it one of the best. It's remote by design — the Chisos Mountains rising out of the desert, the Rio Grande cutting through the canyon country, some of the darkest skies in North America. It's a place that demands you be fully present, which is exactly what couples need.
The Chisos Mountain Lodge is the only lodging inside the park and books far in advance. The Lost Mine Trail is the right hike for most couples — challenging enough to feel like an accomplishment, views good enough to justify every step. At night, the sky is extraordinary.
Bring one thing to read aloud to each other. The quiet out there is unusual. Use it.
Fort Davis sits in the Davis Mountains at 5,000 feet — the highest town in Texas — and it's where you'll find the McDonald Observatory, one of the premier observatories in the world. The Star Party programs on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday nights give you access to research-grade telescopes and some of the best dark skies anywhere. Fort Davis itself is small and genuinely charming, with the historic fort and good hiking in Davis Mountains State Park.
The Star Party is worth the drive alone. Standing in the dark looking at something genuinely enormous together does something good to people.
A great trip helps. Therapy changes things.
I work with couples across Texas who feel disconnected, stuck in the same arguments, or like they're navigating life in parallel rather than together. Sessions are fully virtual, 50 minutes, private pay — no referral needed, no waitlist.
Fredericksburg is the most polished option on this list — a Hill Country town with a strong wine trail, excellent restaurants, historic German architecture, and a downtown that rewards an afternoon of wandering. It's about 5 hours from Midland, which makes it a full weekend, but the drive through the Hill Country is part of the experience. The Texas Wine Trail has grown considerably and the quality is genuinely worth it now.
Pick one winery and stay a few hours rather than hitting five in an afternoon. A slow afternoon in one place beats a rushed tour of several.
Guadalupe Mountains is the most underrated national park in Texas and possibly the most underrated in the country. Home to the highest peak in Texas (Guadalupe Peak, 8,751 ft) and a fossil reef from an ancient sea. The hiking is serious and the solitude is real — even in peak season this place is quiet. Best for couples who genuinely want to get away from everything.
The Guadalupe Peak trail is 8.5 miles round trip with 3,000 ft of elevation. Do it together and you'll have something that belongs to just the two of you.
Balmorhea is one of the most surreal spots in Texas — a natural spring-fed swimming pool in the middle of the desert, fed by San Solomon Springs at a constant 72–76°F and crystal clear. It's the world's largest natural spring-fed swimming pool. Pair it with a night in Fort Davis and you have a full weekend with two genuinely unique experiences.
Arrive early, before the heat builds. The spring water against the desert air is genuinely unusual. Take your time in it.
El Paso is often overlooked but it's a genuinely interesting city with excellent food, a strong arts scene, and the Franklin Mountains State Park in the middle of it. The border culture makes the food scene unlike anything else in Texas. For a city getaway with substance, it's the best option within driving distance of Midland.
Eat at L&J Cafe, hike in the Franklin Mountains in the morning, and take your time in the Kern Place neighborhood in the afternoon.
When a Getaway Isn't Enough
A good trip creates space. It lowers the temperature, interrupts routine, and reminds you why you chose each other. What it can't do is change the patterns. If the same dynamics follow you on every vacation, that's the thing that needs attention.
I work with couples virtually across Texas — meaning wherever you are in the state, there's no commute and no waitlist. I specialize in EFT-informed couples work, neurodiverse couples, and helping partners who feel like they're speaking different languages finally get through to each other.
