Weekend Trips in Montana for Couples
Weekend Trips in Montana for Couples
Montana weekends are unlike anything else in the country. The scale of the landscape, the genuine wildness of places like Glacier and the Beartooth, and the particular quality of Montana light in summer and fall all make a weekend away here one of the most memorable experiences available to couples anywhere in the West. This is a guide to the trips worth making and what makes each one specifically good for two people.
Big country, big trips — and a relationship worth having them in.
I work with Montana couples virtually — no commute, sessions from home. If something between you makes even good weekends feel effortful, that is worth addressing directly.

Weekend trips within Montana
The most extraordinary landscape in Montana. Going-to-the-Sun Road is one of the great drives in the world. The Highline Trail, the Many Glacier area, and the lakes at St. Mary are all worth specific trips. Book lodging and road vehicle reservations well in advance — Glacier is extremely popular in summer. September is ideal: crowds drop, foliage begins, and the light is exceptional.
The largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. The lake towns of Polson, Bigfork, and Whitefish all have good dining and lodging. Cherry season in late July produces one of the best farmers market and orchard experiences in the state. Kayak or boat rentals give you access to the lake's extraordinary clarity.
The most polished mountain town in Montana. Whitefish Mountain Resort for skiing in winter and mountain biking in summer. Downtown Whitefish has excellent restaurants and a genuinely lively bar scene. The best base for Glacier access and worth staying in its own right.
Missoula is Montana's most culturally alive city. The University of Montana campus, excellent independent restaurants, and the Clark Fork River running through the center of town. The Bitterroot Valley south of Missoula for a scenic drive with hiking and fishing. The combination of city energy and immediate wilderness access makes Missoula one of the best Montana weekend bases.

The Beartooth Highway between Red Lodge and Yellowstone's northeast entrance is considered one of the most scenic roads in America. The drive alone is worth the trip. Red Lodge is a charming historic mining town with good dining and lodging. Combine with the Lamar Valley in Yellowstone for wildlife viewing that has no equal anywhere in the lower 48.
Montana's southern neighbor and one of the most extraordinary places on earth. The Grand Prismatic Spring, Lamar Valley for wolf and bison watching, Mammoth Hot Springs, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Visit in spring or fall to avoid the worst crowds. The Lamar Valley at dawn in October is one of the great wildlife experiences available to anyone.
