Best Weekend Getaways in New Hampshire for Couples Who Need a Real Reset

New Hampshire packs more landscape variety into a small state than almost anywhere in the country. These are the weekends worth planning.

Sagebrush Counseling is a virtual therapy practice for couples and individuals across New Hampshire. I work with couples in Manchester, Nashua, Bedford, and throughout New Hampshire. All sessions are virtual.

I work with couples in New Hampshire who live within two hours of the White Mountains, the seacoast, and several of the most beautiful lakes in the northeast, and who haven't been to any of them together in years. The state is small enough that a real getaway doesn't require a flight. It requires deciding to go.

The seasons in New Hampshire are genuinely distinct, which means any of these destinations has a specific version that is better than the others depending on when you go. Fall is the obvious answer for most of them. But early summer in the mountains and winter in Portsmouth both offer experiences the foliage crowds never get.

Destination 01

North Conway is the most accessible entry point to the White Mountains and the right base for couples who want mountain scenery without committing to backcountry logistics. The drive up Route 16 through Pinkham Notch to the base of Mount Washington is one of the better scenic drives in New England, and the trail to the summit of Tuckerman Ravine is achievable for couples with moderate fitness. The town itself has the outlets, the restaurants, and the lodging options that make a weekend practical rather than requiring advance planning. Go in late September or October when the foliage in the notches is at its peak and the summer crowds are gone.

Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in New Hampshire and Wolfeboro on its eastern shore bills itself as the oldest summer resort in the country, with some justification. The town is small and genuinely pleasant to walk through, the lake is large enough to feel genuinely open, and the combination of water, old New England architecture, and good food makes a weekend there feel complete without requiring activity planning. The lake cruise on the M/S Mount Washington gives two people a few hours on the water together. In summer the lake swimming is exceptional. In fall the foliage around the lake is among the best in the state.

Franconia Notch is the most dramatic mountain corridor in New Hampshire, with the Flume Gorge, Echo Lake, and the aerial tramway to the top of Cannon Mountain all accessible within a few miles of each other. The notch itself, with the mountains rising on both sides of Interstate 93, is one of the more striking drives in New England. Profile Lake at the base of Cannon Mountain provides the specific quality of still mountain water in a glacial cirque that produces the kind of quiet that two people can sit in together without needing to fill it. Couples who have been to North Conway tend to find Franconia more dramatic and less commercial.

Portsmouth is the most cultured weekend option New Hampshire offers, with a walkable historic downtown, a serious food scene, and the seacoast immediately adjacent. The Strawbery Banke museum occupies a full neighborhood block of restored colonial architecture. The harbor waterfront has the specific quality of a working New England port that has also become genuinely pleasant without becoming fake. For Manchester and Nashua couples, Portsmouth is under an hour away and works as a day trip or an overnight. The combination of good food, a walkable compact center, and easy access to Hampton Beach and the seacoast makes it the most complete domestic option in the state.

The Monadnock region in southwestern New Hampshire has the specific quality of old New England that has not been discovered by the weekend visitors who fill North Conway and Portsmouth. Mount Monadnock itself is the most climbed mountain in North America, accessible in a half day and producing views over five states from the summit. Peterborough is one of the more genuinely pleasant small towns in New England, with the MacDowell artist colony in its surroundings and the kind of unhurried town center that rewards walking through slowly. For couples in the Manchester and Nashua area, it is close enough to feel like a genuine getaway and different enough to function as one.

When the Weekend Is Not Enough

A weekend in the White Mountains or on Lake Winnipesaukee does real work for couples who are depleted and fundamentally connected. It is less effective when the disconnection has become structural and the good days end with both people feeling like the problem came with them. If the foliage is beautiful and you still feel far from each other, that is useful information.

That is where the intensive comes in. A couples intensive is a concentrated block of therapeutic work designed for couples who want to use time away to go deeper rather than just recover. I offer intensives focused on communication, infidelity recovery, intimacy, and neurodiverse relationships.

A Note From My Practice

The mountains open something. Therapy helps you keep it open.

In my work with couples in Manchester, Nashua, Bedford, and throughout New Hampshire, the trips that matter most are the ones that create enough space for something honest to surface. The landscape opens the door. The therapy is where that conversation continues with support.
